November 7, 2005 – A journey to Taipei, Taiwan in Asia

Taiwan: A Warm Island

Flying into Taipei from Shanghai with a stopover in Hong Kong, I had no idea what to expect. I didn't know if it was going to be a mini-China, a mini-Japan, like Hong Kong, or a combination. Turns out that they have their own separate culture with influences from other nations as well as from their own indigenous tribes (nine of them). But not really a combination if you get what I mean.

I entered the country going through some laser beams at the security checkpoint. Later I found out that those laser beams were used to check for avian flu on visitors! I also entered Taiwan with all sensors alert and with the aggression switch turned on. Quickly, I realized the friendliness of the people on this island, which melted away the aggression attitude I picked up while traveling in China.

The next day, on the way to the National Palace Museum, I noticed how warm and lush Taiwan was - really a tropical island!
